1993 — One Buddy Missing

Bill just couldn't make it this year. We hated to go without him but we have our priorities in order. Bill and John left without Ken in '92, and in '93 John and Ken took the whole trip without Bill. We missed you, Bill.

We headed out from Denver, made a stop in Kremmling to visit John's mom, and then rode on to Craig for the night. Stopped to check out Dinosaur National Monument and proceeded to Vernal. It was July 4 so we got to enjoy the fireworks and parade. Then we turned our eyes toward Salt Lake City. Arriving at Christopher's and Wesley's house (Wesley was gone for the week) we planned to stop "for one night." Shade trees, balmy weather, and a generally delicious feeling of relaxation made it just too unthinkable to head on out the next day, so we stayed a second night. Two days into our stay we loaded Christopher on the back and blasted over the Salt Flats to Wendover, NV, to do some gambling. After losing sufficient money we blasted on back in the cool of the night and spent a third night in Salt Lake.

Finally it was time to go and we headed north out of Salt Lake to Logan, where we took a nice canyon road up into the hills above Logan. Following a series of state roads we reached Garden City on the shore of Bear Lake, where we did the standard tourist gig of enjoying terrific homemade blackberry milkshakes. Pressing north we reached Montpelier, ID, where we called it a day. The next day, taking US 89 north, we entered Wyoming and, a little south of Jackson, headed southeast to Pinedale. As it turned out, Pinedale was having its Rendezvouz, the big bash of the year. Lucking into perhaps the last available room in town, we headed out to enjoy the festivities. Lots of drinking and good times that night—we closed the Cowboy Bar.

The next day a long ride took us to Rock Springs and across I-80, until we turned south to Saratoga. In Saratoga we stayed at our customary Sage and Sand Motel and looked up Ken's friend and former roommate, Thor. Home was the destination the following day, starting with a run across the Snowy Range to Centennial, then down eight miles of dirt road to Foxpark, where we then jogged southwest to Walden. From there over Cameron Pass and down the Poudre Canyon through a damp, cold cloud, to Fort Collins and on home.

These first two shots are at Dinosaur. John was excited about something. Notice his old Virago.

Next we see Ken at the Motel Dine A Ville in Vernal. The Dine A Ville and the pink dinosaur are now gone.

In Salt Lake we relaxed with Christopher.

We rode over to Wendover for the day. In the first shot, John and Christopher walk along the Salt Flats at the rest area on I-80. On the second shot we pulled off at an exit on the return trip.
