John got it all started when he bought his old Yamaha Virago. Ken was next with his Honda CB750 Custom, and then Bill jumped in head first with his Honda Shadow. Tooling around on weekends was fun but it wasn't long before we all started thinking about taking a real trip. So what the heck we did!
Starting out on a Saturday morning we headed out I-70 and took US 40 over Berthoud Pass. We made a stop to visit John's Mom in Kremmling and then rode on to Steamboat Springs, where we found a campground at the east end of town right next to the Yampa River. (Don't look for this campground today. They built a freeway interchange where it used to be.)
We cooled off with a couple cold ones in one of the few bars in town, and then cooled off some more in the municipal pool with water slides and other fun stuff. Then we rode up this lonely road into the hills and found sort of a one-block row of shops and restaurants all by itself up on the hill toward the ski area, where we had dinner. Of course, that little solitary block of establishments is now in the heart of the ski resort and the whole hillside has been consumed with houses and hotels.
Next day we headed out west on US 40 and then south on CO 13 to Rifle. We set up camp at Rifle Gap Falls and bathed in the little waterfall close by our campground. Riding into Rifle for dinner and then back was made a little more exciting by all the sand and gravel on the curves of the road.
The next day we headed home on I-70. Just a short trip, but we knew we'd found something pretty dang cool.
"What do you guys say we do this again?"
